Unfortunately I'm too busy working on projects for our own business to take on outside work, even as consultancy, but just thought it worth mentioning. I won't post their details as I don't want to be responsible for a flood of recruitment offers, which I'm sure they've got covered. However they have offices in Cardiff and Bristol/Bath and are working on some pretty exciting big data/mission critical systems. If anyone's interested, please contact me directly. I am experienced with all required software such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, In design, Sketch 3 etc. I do both print and digital design, these include brand design, editorial design, app and websites, posters/flyers, as well as a majority of other things related to design. Digital design is definitely one of the strongest areas of my skill set. I have a sensible/logical head for understanding user journeys and designing with that in mind, but I need to stress that I'm not a coder/developer. Although I have worked along side developers before so have an understanding of their required file structures and layouts. I have worked on a freelance basis ?on-site? at a few agencies around Bristol such as Epoch Design, designing/tweaking their final pages for a large American dental companies website and also at Dirty Design as a Graphic Designer creating infographics for Bristols NHS Hospitals, which will be printed and displayed in the appropriate hospitals but can be seen on their site here - http://www.uhbristol.nhs.uk/about-us/key-publications/infographics/ [http://www.uhbristol.nhs.uk/about-us/key-publications/infographics/] Although, the majority of my work is designing remotely. It has become more and more complex over time and, having come back to it recently, I am finding it difficult to find stuff. I think it's time to refactor it to use a standard MVC library rather one that's a bit MVC that I'm making up as I go along. I might make the jump to Typescript as well, since I've found this helps out in the long run. For other recent work, I've recently been using Typescript and PureMVC. This has been working really well - it's obvious where to put and find things. And importantly, PureMVC doesn't care if the views are DOM based, which is key for my particular use. I'd use PureMVC for this other project but, to be honest, I'd like to use something that is going to look better on my CV than a port of an old Flash library. The impression I get is that Angular wants a DOM based view. I've had a play with Backbone and Typescript in the past, but found they don't seem like a good fit (not at least adding a lot of cruft). I may be wrong on both of these. Does anyone have any tips for a nice MVC framework that works with Typescript and that is view agnostic? Yes, you can. There's quite a big price range, but for larger houses its worth spending a bit more to get better range. as a general rule, the more antennas there are on the router, the better the range, but this is a very broad rule of thumb. I'd also recommend getting a router which supports the open source DD-WRT firmware, which allows you to tweak a crapload of settings, including transmission power. A quick Google brings up an interesting list of recommendations: http://www.tomsguide.com/us/best-wifi-routers,review-2498.html - it really depends how much your friend is willing to spend to get it sorted! I spent ages trying various different setups and finally settled with an oldish netgear WiFi router (running DD-WRT) connected to the Virgin port at the front of the house, and a Ubiquiti AP connected via Cat5e. The latter has Power over Ethernet and so data and power come in through the same cat5e, meaning I could install centrally in the house. I use the same SSID on both APs and so devices can switch depending on where the stronger signal is. Coverage and throughput is very good, even out in the garden. At a bare minimum, I would definitely recommend ditching the router you get for free with your broadband provider. I had nothing but trouble with the Virgin Super Hub until I switched it into modem mode and swapped in a DD-WRT router instead. If the router can't be moved but it's possible to run a cable, it's a better idea to do that and use a separate access point fed by cable, rather than a repeater/wireless extender (which usually just have one radio so they need to receive and retransmit, slowing things down a fair bit). > Can you buy routers that's are much more powerful and so extenders wouldn't be necessary? Pretty much any will be able to output the UK legal maximum for 2.4GHz or for 5GHz indoor use. There are differences in power between different routers beyond this but you can only use it if you lie to them about the country you're in and use illegally high power. If you ignore legal aspects, there's a technical problem with this too; you need two-way comms and this won't improve power of your client devices. Also in many cases, if one client can't "hear" another client transmitting, they stomp on each others transmissions, known as the "hidden node problem" (this can be avoided by forcing RTS/CTS at the cost of slowing down all transmissions, but not all devices will allow fiddling with this). Get the new gigabit class ones , they are more expensive but use all the pins to create much more interference resistance using mimo. Also be sure to specifically pair the devices using the software, if they just find each other on the network they are in discovery mode and will drop for a while on interference to look for better options. There is open software for configuring these devices on github, but I can remember its name. Message-ID: For several years I've been satisfied with my two home printers... and then they both decide to break at the same time. Can't really blame Canon for the impressively terminal paper jam, but HP's built-in obsolesce is impressive. So, what is the hive-minds' current thoughts on home printing options? Ideally something that ticks the following: - A4 colour - does not have to be photo-quality although that would be nice - Ethernet or wifi, although hanging USB off a Airport Express works - Duplex - Not stupidly expensive ink/toner - And most importantly reliable and not going to pop it's clogs after 3-4 years. Looking at low cost colour lasers, the price to replace the "starter" toner with a full set, and the cost of drums/belts/fusers and other "consumables" is painful, but then losing a colour, having to replace a head and then having an irreplaceable cog break for no reason is painful too... Anyone come across a model/brand that isn't playing the game that HP and friends are playing? I recently asked about that Epsom printer with the big tank. He said that the printer itself was very poor. I have an HP Deskjet F4580. I don't print much and it uses loads of ink which I swear is more expensive per gram than gold. It's never worked properly as a scanner either (I can use the webscan feature, but its never worked as Twain or WIA or whatever it's called. ). It has, however never broken or jammed and it seems pretty well made. I'm going for a black and white laser next time. Do we know of any software that can do this (ease of use is pretty important). The intention is to store the clips on Amazon S3 (available) and the original (raw) video will get moved to AWS Glacier storage (cheaper for lots of data) Any video peeps have any suggestions? Is the laser faster (and does it matter)? 3. Do the inkjet prints run when wet? Damp resistant printing gives you lots more versatility. I'd always go for a laser for any kind of "business printing" with large areas of solid colour; a more professional finish and more practical for making multiple copies of reports, short runs of promo material, etc etc. There are powder refill kits for laser toners and capacity is higher, so less ink changes. Best of all, make friends with someone who has a posh colour copier/printer at work. :-) I hope that's useful. - Paddy From tim at matter2media.com Fri Jul 15 12:46:48 2016 From: tim at matter2media.com (Tim Kindberg) Date: Fri, 15 Jul 2016 12:46:48 +0100 Subject: [_] iPhone needing to be (re-)initialised but no sim In-Reply-To: References: <5694dde6-7c3b-760a-3463-a45c6478877c@matter2media.com> Message-ID: <693d3ec9-20c8-8be6-23d8-32f79a3d4868@matter2media.com> My problem was that I didn't know which carrier it was locked to but I managed to find out through the paper trail. Benedict Gaster at UWE is planning on deploying 4 LoRaWAN gateways in the next few months - I think mainly on UWE property to start with, but as that stretches from Frenchay down to Bower Ashton, that could cover a large part of the city. I am working on devices for the #BristolApproach #Citizen Sensing project, and with a proposal to install 40-50 air quality monitoring devices across the city, which will potentially add a couple more gateways to the network if they are needed (though the ThingsNetwork say the gateways can receive over 20km, that's in an ideal situation, and Bristol, being somewhat hilly, may not be so ideal). I'd like these gateways - which could either be bought from the Things Network or homebuilt - to be at Easton Community Centre and/or Barton Hill Setlement, though I haven't talked to either organisation yet. Ben and I have a meeting in a couple of weeks; maybe it would be good for you an me to meet next week sometime, and discuss? Please let me know when / where would be good for you. Contractors? Most Java dev's that I know have moved to scala or clojure or are only writing Java doing really, really interesting things. Why? Because that's where the market has gone - traditional j2ee stuff, jboss type stuff is viewed rightly or wrongly as legacy Java tech and is in most places being phased out or put on life support. That's not to say that is right that this is happening but the fashion seems to be towards lightweight embedded servers (jetty, Netty, etc) with fat jars as the deployment target not the more traditional enterprise Java mule esb, liferay, alfresco, etc. There are still a lot of Hadoop big data type contracts and contractors about - Cheltenham seems to be a hot spot ;-) The other thing to note is that contractors are quite thin on the ground - I'm not sure if the recent changes in tax and IR35 have had an affect on supply but it's hard finding people in sorts of roles especially if you've got to be in weird places (by weird I mean not a major town / city or on a fringe industrial estate) I find more and more contractors don't drive for example because they've just worked in London or reading or Swindon. The SC bit should work in your favour though as people seem to like to gain SC if they can. Good luck - you may need it. The MySQL error log will contain a crash entry that provides you with information about what happened and where in the system issue arose. This is going to be the starting point. The best thing is that you can reproduce it and with some digging around the bugs database you'll be able to see if it's a known bug rather than opening a new one without research. Whilst it sounds buggy, it might be a system specific issue such as config or resource related. You're varying things with the switch to another system with different version so the test you've performed is not like-for-like. Since the query doesn't crash new versions it might be that it's already fixed in a newer version of MySQL. Feel free to reach out on Monday if you have more information and I'll show you more places and tools we use at Percona to debug these types of issues.
