Be careful not to confuse pages with posts (although technically in
WordPress a page is just a special kind of post).

Wordpress will automatically rewrite *pages* by name, regardless of the
permalink setting, i.e. if you create a page with a URL slug of "nicename",
as per your example, will work no matter what you set the
permalink structure to, so long as your .htaccess file is there.

The permalink setting is intended for *posts* which often require a more
complex URL than just %postname%, and allows you set a different structure
to the one which is used for pages.
