Late to the party (holidays, holidays) but I run GMail (and other apps) inside instances of Prism [1] (formerly XULRunner) now, mainly in order to protect Firefox from memory-hungry apps, but I've also come to prefer it to "regular" browser-based running of these apps. Links still open in your default browser, which is great. Yes, it could be more configurable, but I find it perfectly usable. Note that on the Mac, it seems to only want to run one Prism "app" at a time, whereas there's no such restriction on Windows. Haven't tried it on Linux.
