One comment to anyone installing Ubuntu right now - Make sure you get the server kernel, the default (standard) kernel is compiled with some unfortunate options for the new scheduler - basically anything running as root will be prioritised over anything else (renicing it won't have an effect). The classic example would be a backup running as root (or your package manager updating etc.) Fix has been accepted, but I'm not sure if it's made it's way into the repositories yet.
