Bizarrely though a friend's brother was pushed into the river on his way
home from a rather large Saturday night not too many weeks ago and that did
make it into the news.

While that story may or may not be true (always take an email forward  
with a pinch of salt) but it's certainly believable. As Dale and I  
have experienced (and some of my friends) kids on the cycle path are  
an issue. Things don't always make the news. I've known of several  
attacks that you'd think would make the news but didn't. For example,  
a former housemate of mine was robbed at gunpoint and given a pistol- 
whipping in town a couple of years ago. Baseball bats certainly are  
used. When I was a school, a kid in the year below me got a pretty  
serious beating with baseball bats in St Andrews park. I'd guess that  
there are plenty of people who buy baseball bats with no intention of  
playing the game.
