[_] [OT] The great English Cuisine :D

Ok, I'll bite.

(geddit?)

I love english food. I love food in general, and I have settled in Spain
where everyone seems to appreciate good food (seriously). So what to do to
enjoy british cuisine? Cook I do it myself.

I have Deliah's "Complete Cookery Course" [1] which has lots of great
british recipes, as well as recipes from french cookery and others too. Last
Christmas I followed her recipe for Christmas Pudding, and it came out
brilliantly (I managed to buy all the ingredients at the Boqueria market!
[2]).

Here's what I would recommend to a foreigner visiting, who wants to sample
good british food.

   - *Typical dishes* are things like roast dinners, yorkshire puddings,
sausage and mash, more yorkshire puddings and fish & chips. You can order
these in almost any pub or restaurant, but be prepared to be disappointed
unless you [a] go some where good (not necessarily expensive -- ask for
recommendations, and steer clear of Weatherspoons and the like) or [b] get
invited around to someones house for homemade food.
   - Leave room for *desert*. We're really good a them! Try a summer fruit
pudding or spotted dick 'n' custard.
   - Like the spanish, we have a great deal of offal and *cured
meat*products. Push the boat out and try black pudding, faggots and
haggis.
   - If you go to the coast, try some *cockles* in vinegar. I'd personally
forgotten all about them until I found out that it's a typical spanish
   appertiser.
   - Go to a good *butchers* (or market) and get some good sausages -
   lincoln pork, beef etc. Mmm...
   - *Cheese*. Funnily enough, people don't associate britain with cheese.
Play "word association" with a continental european and they will always
associate Holland or France with cheese, which is a shame because neither
(IMHO) have the range or quality of cheeses. There's a Paxton and Wilson [3]
in Bath: the sales people are helpful and knowledgable - go!
