0800 numbers do work from abroad. Like most numbers they're just dialled as +44800blahblah (lose the zero and add +44). A lot of companies offer alternative numbers as a legacy of when they did not work (many years ago), or to avoid confusion from users that the calls are not free. The value of a 0800 number in marketing is not what it used to be... No UK mobile networks allow these calls free of charge any more, and they do not come out of monthly minutes. Campaign sites like saynoto0870 even offer indexes of alternative geograhic numbers for companies that have them (as well as 0870/0871/0845). Depending on the company type it may be more beneficial to have a landline number - especially as in 2006 (last time I worked for a mobile company) 33%+ of all UK phone calls originated from a mobile.... just my ramblings....
