Dialling one of my US hosts 0800 number (or whatever the equivalent
is) you get a lovely Texan lady saying 'This call will be charged at
normal international rates' and then goes on to connect fine, I
imagine UK numbers would be the same

.... but it is only a semi-educated guess ;)
