[_] Campaign Monitor alternatives?

Aren't these types of emails ok to send out via the server itself? I
thought the chances of getting put in spam/junk folder or not getting
through mainly applied to mass mailing, not to emails sent to a single
recipient, even if you're sending lots of them. I think it could
become very expensive if you start tailoring these emails to a
specific user, say 1 user receives updates on 2 categories, another on
3 etc, each one would be a campaign in CM's eyes, and as CM is $5 per
campaign costs could quickly get out of hand.
