[_] Sending directory username/password programmatically.

Hello all,

Is there a clever way of sending a username and password
programmatically or via session/cookie settings, to log a user into a
protected directory without them seeing the prompt (a confirmation,
like the one in FireFox is ok, but not the actual username and
password question box).

Sending the url

http://username:password@domain.com/directory/protected

sort of works in Firefox (it doesnt cope well with refreshes for example).

However this url method seems disabled in IE7 ....
