+1 for S3, use it for personal backups, and just spec'ing things out
to use it for the bulk of storage/transfer for a revision of  a web
app with real world distrubted, ermm, drones, to save the main server
from being hammered, both load and bandwidth wise.

Did some calculations based on storing 30gb of files, with 100 active
installs each getting 3gb a month transfer (each file is around 30mb)
so 3000gb total, worked out at $600 a month, which seems pretty good
(welcome to see alternatives), and obviously as you only pay for what
you use, you can scale for the peaks and troughs really easily, whilst
leaving the core architecture of the app/server alone.
