An approach that works for me is the use of internet mirrors. A main file store at my home keeps the mirror I have in a mates house in worthing and my server in london updated with changes to the data with rsync. I return the favour by hosting a mirror for him. My using a webserver such as apache I can make my files accessible over the internet. To set something like this up a fairly basic knowledge of networks is needed. Although I use linux all the tools are all available on windows. Using low power machines you can create silent computers that consume little power. Stick it on a mates broadband connection and hey presto.
