I've just gone through exactly the same process starting from a base
of zero knowledge on the subject and then putting in minimal research
using AVForums.com and a (surprisingly knowledgeable) Currys bod on
Saturday.

As has been mentioned 1080p, the higher the contrast ratio the better,
ditto response times were the things I was looking for.

Shopping around I've picked up a 1080p Samsung TV (circa £200 cheaper
on Amazon than Currys), Samsung DVD player that can scale up to HD*
and a Samsung pro-logic amp and speaker system that passed the Mrs'
will-it-look-ok-in-the-lounge test for under your budget.

You need to also factor in some furniture for it, or a bracket, plus
at least one HDMI cable to link the bits together. Ultimately you'll
want an HD signal coming in, so Sky HD or I believe Virgin have a
similar offering or if (unlike me) you've got a PS3 or XBox 360 then
you can use them for HD DVD and gaming at least.

*I'm not convinced but it was only £55
