Dopplr (though I don't travel much) - www.dopplr.com - is interesting
from the pretty minimalist UI point of view and the wonderful ways in
which they're making data interesting with graphs and suchlike, and
integrating with other web services. See Matt Biddulph's slides for
his talk "Coding on the shoulders of giants":

Slidehare itself is pretty cool, too.

You've already mentioned Twitter. I love it, but its usefulness
depends on the network of friends you have on there.

I recently found Crusher - www.crush3r.com - which is great for
organising social events where you're trying to get a bunch of mates
to agree on a date/time.

Also:
* OpenID - log into sites with your OpenID instead of having to
remember yet another username/password combo. - http://openid.net/,

* OAuth - I think it's to Authentication what OpenID is to identity.

And the biggest thing this year? Lolcats, of course :)
