I asked one of our senior Java devs. He said this:

"I'd say things are looking pretty good wrt the job market,  and I'd
say key technologies to know are

1) spring... everyones after it these days - j2ee is too big and heavy
for most dev shops
2) junit/tdd... shows commitment to quality
3) strong core language knowledge
4) strong OO design
5) know your design patterns...

1 will get you in to the building, 2 will prove you should be there, 3
will underline the fact that you should be there, 4 will show them
youre more than just a developer, and 5 will show them that you think
and design, rather than just write code."
