In many cases you'll find it easier if you're doing a real world site
that needs to encode a lot of video, and you'll probably end up with a
dedicated video server, there are some windows based ones but the unix
"pieces of string" approaches have always been more reliable and more
cost effective everywhere I've worked with large amounts of video (streaming
or otherwise).

Maybe to the man on the street as you put it, but you're being a bit
unfair to ffmeg there otherwise.
