Because the web isn't just about 'applications' ? There is a 
multi-billion dollar casual gaming industry out there that is crying out 
for decent 3D support in a plugin. Flash hasn't delivered yet, Java was 
dropped from most browsers, and Silverlight will ignore it too. That's 
just one field that could have worked.

'tis foolish IMHO. The possibilities are huge.
