I'm hoping that's possible, however her current host has given her 2
weeks grace until they turn off her account due to non-payment, (even
though she says she went in and spoke to them and tried to pay but
they wouldn't let her, and also they were sending her reminders to an
old address) and they are also the registra.

It all sounds like a bit of a mess to me, and I thought easiest option
would be to move the domain as well as change the nameservers.

I'll contact the host/registra to see what they say
