But really low bitrate.  It looked awful.

And the design of the buttons etc was pretty low rent as well.

Virb.com's player is a lovely example of how that can look.  4:3 and  
16:9 support, a 'light switch' to darken all the screen around the  
player and a nice minimal and subtle design.

Complaints aside...  Way better than having to deal with Real/MS as  
you say.
