I think you've found the wrong group for this question but there we
go: On this list you might as well have asked, "Which performs better,
an aeroplane or a car?"

General GUI performance, which is probably most relevant at this stage
is much the same on both, neither are good on low end hardware but on
adequate current hardware both work okay most of the time.

Neither performs better than the other particularly significantly on
application benchmarks where the application is well coded and uses
probably 90% of the CPU power whereas the OS probably uses <10%. The
same is true of unix/linux/junkos.

So, go with which ever you like the look of best, try them out a bit
at PCWorld [*] compare price, looks, warranties even, don't make
performance important unless you really want your budget to grow
ridiculously and you actually know *exactly* what you need to go
fast/faster and are willing to do some serious research into it. (a
number of years experience might be enough, but often not.)

I use both and neither is as good is often claimed by their hardcore
advocates, but both are okay.

Loads of people do, but they'll tell you how their personal favourite
operating system performs rather than answering your question.

*: I can't beleive I suggested that either.
