TBH, I'm not sure I'm /that/ enamoured of the FF icon/logo — but it / 
is/ a damn sight better than the 2012 Olympics logo, I'll grant you.

Yes, he did. And such is the argument /for/ competitions (and other  
sorts of spec work). It's an argument that goes back and forth  
continually among designers.

My opinion is that competitions are acceptable where non-profits are  
involved, as they're short of funds to begin with and even if one  
doesn't win anything one still gets to have supported an (ostensibly)  
worthy cause.

I'm not so happy with competitions by for-profit corporations.

I suppose I'm showing my cynicism about the whole Olympics bit by  
lumping them in with the for profits (or are they for-profit?).
