The hostel is clean, cheap (£10-15/night/person), in a perfect
location and they have a luggage room for gear (whether it's secure
enough for expensive music gear I dunno — there were people storing
guitars, saxophones and the like when I stayed there).

It also fills up frequently (book early) and it's dorm-style living:
shared rooms, (edible) cafeteria-style breakfast and very limited
space for personal effects, but it's a great value if price is the
primary concern.

If you don't mind going to £20-30/night/person you can find B&Bs
around Cotham/Redland/Clifton if you look (and book early, of course).

Toad Lodge (12 Cotham Pk, Bristol, Avon, BS6 6BU,
0117 924 7080) was towards the higher end, but the room was spacious
(top floor, so low ceilings but plenty of space for gear & en suite)
and the breakfast quite nice.

I spent a month at Sunderland Guest House on Sunderland Place (off St
Pauls Road, just up Whiteladies from the Triangle) when I first moved
to Bristol and it was great — only cold fare for breakfast, but /
very/ reasonably priced and while the singles were quite cozy there's
at least one nice size double in the basement near the dining room
with plenty of closet space for gear. Can't find reference to it
online tho, so maybe it's not there anymore (which would be a
surprise — they seemed to be full a good deal of the time).

There was another up on the downs (Downs View Guest House, I think)
which was outstanding, but well on the cher end of the scale and
quite a ways away from venues and such.

I stayed in one south of the river (forget the name) and it was the
filthiest, nastiest rat-trap in which it has ever been my misfortune
to stay — and I've stayed in plenty of cheapo no-tell motels in my
day. Meaning no disrespect to the southern area in general (which
seemed nice enough the times I've been down there) but I'd avoid B&Bs
down that way.
