OK, I had to jump through a few hoops, but I got there in the end.

1. Try to access gmail.com, mail.google.com etc on built-in browser:
"Connection error." All other sites fine. Weird, and just tried again
and it's fine now.
2. Try to access above with Opera Mini 4 Beta. Google thinks it's a
desktop browser, so doesn't give me the link to download the GMail
app.
3. Download Opera Mini 3.
4. Try to access above with Opera Mini 3. OK - I'm a mobile device
this time, but OM3 doesn't say what phone I have, so I end up with a
different version of the GMail app than the "...for K800i" one I got
last time.

So, I got there in the end. Thanks for the feedback, though.

Oh, one other thing - Opera Mini 4 Beta's zoom browsing is *really,
really cool*:
