Hi Chris,

Try Audacity and musigenesis. http://www.musigenesis.com/

Musigenesis is just a shareware thing, but you can record it's output
with audacity if you want... That will be fun for making up sounds and
beats. Or he may be more into recording or adding voice, and audacity
is good at that...
