The Underscore Archives

Anyone used this? I'm undecided if I should got for a proper nas solution,
keep buying external hard drives, or just get some internal drives and stick
them in a couple of old PC's with freenas on them.

If not freenas, is there anything similar that's worth considering? 

The information is not mission critical but speed of restoration is a major
factor.
