I'd highly recommend the 6mp Canon Ixus 800 IS which I picked up for
around £200 and was used without complaint travelling around S America
and Asia for 4 months.

Amazing battery life and great pictures. It's only faults are that it
isn't an SLR (no control over DOF, limited exposure controls etc) and
you could probably pick up a 10mp model now for roughly the same
price.
