If it ever had been a big deal, it was 18 months ago when it was first
announced, not now.

I'm not very fond of Yahoo! and would haved moved my account if there
was a free, open-source alternative I could run myself (something much
better than Gallery). Given that there's been 18 months for such a
thing to appear and neither I nor any other Flickr user has bothered
to do anything about it, I doubt anything will. It might be
interesting to wait another couple of months to see if this has been
the kick in the trousers that's needed to prompt such a thing, but I
doubt it.
