if your brother is more science than fiction then Greg Egan is a great
author. Scifi for scientists if you know what I mean. :-). His short stories
are good but so are his novels.
Alastair Reynolds isn't too bad either. He's got a whole universe to base
stories on so you may just want to dip your toes in before diving in head
first with an entire set..
