Interesting debate....

I agree, anyone who has bought before would more than likely come  
across it, and yes it is very recognizable. On the one hand, I do  
agree with you that the extra security is a serious bonus; especially  
if it will help cut out online fraud. On the other hand, I can see  
what Joel was saying about it putting barriers in the way of the  
consumer and *perhaps* making the sale less likely.

I guess what is required is an element of consumer education to make  
sure people don't bork when they see "Enter your secert password" or  
whatever. From my own experience, the first time that I encountered  
the 3D secure I believe was on the Vue cinema site; for which there  
was no warning I was about to see it and admittedly, had I been a  
fairly in-experienced shopper, that probably would have been quite  
confusing. Perhaps we developers can manage the shopping experience  
so that the user is walked through it to avoid the scenario where  
they would stop the purchase?
