[_] (OT) Faulty product does it have to go back to the manufacture first?

Hello,
I'm sure someone here knows all about this stuff so I guessed it would
be a good place to start.
I brought a macally power adaptor for my apple laptop and it's kind of
melted a bit and now has fallen apart, with purchase order in hand I
contacted the reseller I got it from and asked if I could get it
replaced as its well within its warrenty. The problem is their saying
that it can't be replaced directly and has to go back to the
manufacture? Is this true??
