[_] Mac for a Windows user

Hi

I'm seriously considering getting a Mac laptop but am understandably
nervous about this as I've been using windows since there was a
windows (except a year or so when I ran KDE).

It won't be my main machine, that'll still be windows for the
foreseeable instead It'll be used for bumming around the house with or
for when I go onsite doing contract work; so my main interest right
now is whether I can still be productive when getting to grips with a
new OS. With this in mind I'm wondering whether the Windows virtual
machine technology (Parallels/bootcamp) is ready for day-to-day
usage? E.g. if I get a beefy 2+ Ghz Mac book pro with 2GB Ram can I
run a windows instance with a number of apps running on it, e.g. my
IDE and other licence-paid-for software, too?

I'm obviously going to do a lot more research but as I know there are
a lot of clued-up Mac users on this list I would be interested to know
of any first-hand or anecdotal experiences (particularly any gotchas)
that other underscorers have had when migrating over from Windows.

Also, approx how long does a standard battery last on a new Mac book
pro, assuming one is being careful (dimmed screen etc) and finally,
any reason to wait for a bit? Any new releases on the horizon etc...?

Thanks.

D
