[_] Advice for putting linux on an old laptop

My dad has an old laptop, but doesn't want to part with it yet - it really
doesn't like running windows anymore and he's toyed with putting Linux on
it. He's not particulalry techie, but has had a go with Kubunto, which he
likes the look of - though I think this might have a bit of trouble getting
to this to work on his machine, as it's pretty crap. Specs are:
