layers in photoshop and In Design (and to a certain extent
Illustrator) are different beasts. In photoshop each item has to be on
it's own layer, and groups of items are really layers grouped together
(though you can nest layers if you want. In InDesign, you can have
loads of things existing on a single layer, you have to manually force
yourself to break things up if you need to.

You can turn oulines on for items though, which will help you to see
things, then make sure you 'paste in place' not just a paste,
otherwise you'll have to reposition the element you're pasting.
