As a small thing, I managed to tie in our internal monitoring system
with Bonjour iChat, so all the servers appeared on my buddy list.
Since iChat has green/amber/red for active/idle/away, I used that for
server replication status. The monitoring system messaged me when
something horrible happened. Since Bonjour iChat is just a peer-to-
peer hack of XMPP with multicast DNS, it would be trivial to adapt it
to Jabber.
The active monitoring system with LED alert sign with attached klaxon
was a incredibly useful tool, and changed our whole feeling of
awareness about our site. For various reasons, I never set up SMS
alert messaging, although it was ready to go.
