The Pentium 4 series (including the Pentium D) is based on netburst
technology, which is designed to scale massively but it does it at the
cost of performance at the low end. Its essentially a bet that die
sizes would decrease enough so that it was feasable to run a 30 stage
pipeline, and Intel lost.

CoreDuo is based on the Pentium III core, essentially its a seperate
branch off instead of new technology. Its going back to the things
that made the PPro series the best.

AMD is stuck with an architecture now that makes it hard to go past
certain performance barriers, tehy bet on the short term and are now
having problems.
