Thanks for the reply, I tried three different techniques - non of which
worked:

setAttribute("style","position:relative;left:0");
this.style.postion=foo;
this.className="bar";

which is what made me think it wasn't anything to do with the JS - along
with this.getAttribute("style") returning "position:relative;left:0".
