What has being 'web based' got to do with using a relational/proper
database or not?

You can use mysql and SQLite bundled into a little GUI program on any platform.

As another poster pointed out - if you're doing any real development
work you need to learn about Relational Databases, Normalisation and
SQL.

God save us from 'applications' built on Access. I've had to deal with
enough of those in my time, and pray I never have to again.
