The three (sorry Rich) industry standard packages are maya, softimage and 3D
studio max. If you want to focus more heavily on organic modelling (think
ameobas and hairy critters) then either maya or softimage seem to be the
packages of choice. If you are going for a more technical approach its 3d
studio max - this is PC only though. All require a fairly hefty investment.
