As your Mac based I'd +1 Maya. Lightwave's functionality seems very
application specific and therefore less transferable to other apps.
If you are considering changing machines (or buying a MacBook and
booting Windows) then 3D Studio is by far the friendliest.
Never tried Cinema 4d
