I have read that if you plug on iPod into a new laptop it asks whether
you wish to sync it, or use it in "manual mode" whereby you can just
copy tracks from it and iTunes will not try to sync.

I think in this mode you can also just use it as a normal disk, though I
forget the path to where it is mounted.

I'm waiting to see if this mini-ipod lark has any truth to it before
parting with cash =)
