[_] vpn's?

Can anyone shed some light on this one?
I set up a VPN and terminal services recently and am happily working away
through it on our site, until is gets blocked by our network admin. He
needs assurance that the data is encrypted before he'll allow it opened
again.
...was I being extremely niaive when I assumed that thats what VPN's do?
