Then he's got a USB issue with his PC (perhaps not enough power, especially
as its a bus-powered device) because the red/amber light is NOTHING to do
with the ADSL *line* itself.

It doesn't - and it also disables your Internet connection sharing requiring
a £150 router/hub combination to get around.
Go figure :)
